Medical Assistant
Medical assistants must work under a physician’s direct supervision when performing clinical duties delegated by the physician. In the US, some states allow medical assistants to perform more advanced procedures, such as giving injections or taking X-rays, after passing a test or taking a course. The term should not be confused with a physician assistant, who may perform advanced clinical, therapeutic and surgical procedures.
Medical assistants also help physicians with patient paperwork, patient greeting, and minor procedures such as checking blood pressure or performing blood draws. Certification is usually voluntary, although some employers may require it as a condition of employment. There are two recognized types of certification for medical assistants. They are CMA (Certified Medical Assistant) and RMA (Registered Medical Assistant). The RMA credential is awarded by the American Medical Technologists (AMT) board.
Certified and registered medical assistants are equally ranked and have undergone the same education. The only difference between the two is that they’ve taken different exams to further their medical credentials.
Formal training in addition to experience from externships and certification generally increase the salary, or pay rate for a medical assistants.

Physician Assistant
A Physician assistant is a healthcare professional trained and licensed to practice medicine with limited supervision by a physician. Physician assistants conduct physical exams, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret tests, counsel on preventive health care, assist in surgery, and write prescriptions. The professional requirements typically include at least two years of post-graduate education. Professional licensure is regulated by the medical boards of the individual states. Employment of physician assistants is expected to grow 27 percent from 2006 to 2016, much faster than the average for all occupations. In 2008 the mean total income for physician assistants working at least 32 hours per week was $89,987.
